I have felt incredibly alone in my life. My childhood memories are filled with a painful yearning to have just one person in my life who could understand me. The memory of that yearning surpasses even the obsessive desire for a boyfriend in my early teens. 

In my room, I had a secret cupboard. After my grandma died, it was one of the few things I wanted from her house. The main reason was that it had a key and I could lock it. Inside were just three items:

• A small book of spells for teenage witches that my mom got me when I begged her for it in the giant Barnes and Noble in New York City.
• A deck of tarot cards that disappointed me no matter how often I tried to feel its magic.
• A book on Wicca for teenagers by an author who goes by the name of Silver Ravenwolf, one of my first pocket money purchases from the then somewhat nascent internet.

I did not show these three things to anybody, not even to my closest friends. Nobody would understand me, I was certain. Alone in my room, I would pick up one of the two books and tentatively try out some of the magic within their pages. Sometimes I cast a circle. Sometimes I cast a spell. Sometimes I made a heartfelt prayer. Sometimes I simply devoured the pages and let my imagination run wild.

Though I was never sure I was feeling what I was supposed to, each time I tried to do a little magic, a little pocket of an infinite world of wonder and beauty opened up inside of me. Something came alive and connected me to what is never mentioned in school but weaves its way through all art forms with unspoken words and unseen by most yet felt by all.

Each time I was a little less alone. Each time I was a little more certain. Magic is part of the blueprint of who we are as human beings. You don’t need to be part of any tradition to feel it. There is no right or wrong way to do it. I can be playful and joyful. It can be conjured confidently or tried out tentatively.
