The Origin of April Fool’s and The Wisest Person of Them All

The origin of April Fool’s Day is shrouded in mystery. We find traces all the way back to Noah’s Arc! As with many of our customs, it seems they have been around for longer than recorded history in one fashion or another. A designated day where pranks are played on one another exists across the globe, and for many countries, this day is April 1st.

In Bavaria, we find the first mention of “sending someone into April” in 1618. Today, playing a prank on someone successfully means to have sent them into April. Recorded history reveals fun anecdotes, including one from April 1st, 1698, where it is said people made their way to the London tower to see lions being washed.

April Fool’s however, was yesterday, preceding this blog post, so rest assured that all written here is true. Rather than play a prank, we want to honor the very character that is often the butt of every joke: The Fool.

Here comes the fun part: The fool was often considered one of the wisest people of them all. At a king’s court the fool, dressed in absurd clothing, was said to be one of the few who could candidly give the king the advice he did not want to hear without having their head chopped off.
The fool knew how to entertain and proffer the biting taste of wise words mulled by strange grimaces and jokes.

This is a reminder to pay attention to the wisdom of those often deemed as fools. If society thinks it so, we are likely to be biased ourselves. These wise sages carrying vital teachings might be wearing feathers, beards, and glitter or be dressed in the bodies of silly children. They could be drooling with wild hair, telling jokes on a stage, or singing songs in dirty clothing from a gutter.

It is a reminder to not judge nor open our mouths, instead listen and pay attention with an open mind and open ears. Forget not that our ability to listen is what we receive first in the womb and it is the last to go when we die. Close your eyes or stop perceiving actively if you do not have eyesight, and listen receptively in whatever capacity your body allows, for the wisdom of those you would typically ignore.
