Moons, Ceremonies, and Reconnecting with the Cycles of our Home Planet
Feb 05, 2025
Isn’t it strange to think about how far we have come and how we in many ways have also taken steps backwards?
We have entire universes at our fingertips and in the same breath that we activate those universes we loose others.
We turn on a binge-worthy show and immerse ourselves in the lives of others in the same breath that we loose contact with our life. Our ancestors lived void of many of the distractions we have today. An empty did not prompt a hand reaching out for a thin, black box that sucked us into the lives of others. Instead it was filled with the immediate internal and external life.
Many of us yearn to reconnect with our life even when we are not conscious of it. The essence of who we are is knocking on our inner door and when we don’t listen it makes itself heard via general anxiety, unhappiness, and a vague sense that our life somehow lacks purpose and meaning. At the same time, modern life is demanding and for most of us it is neither possible nor desirable to disconnect from it.
The begs the following question: How do we reconnect to calm, contentment, and the feeling of purpose and meaning without needing to turn our backs upon the modern world?
One answer is living in tune with the natural cycles of our home planet. Its journey around the sun affects nature and it affects our spirit, mind, and body. The waxing and waning of the moon gives a sense of the passage of time. Our ancestors paid such attention to the moon that they gave the full moons throughout the year names that bore special meaning related to the season and its ceremonies.
Many of us know or have heard of some of the names the Native Americans have given to the moons, one of the most famous being the Wolf Moon. Cycling through the years with potent names that help us engage with the world around us gives a feeling of meaning, purpose, and the inner sense of calm that comes with it.
This is neither esoteric nor necessarily magical, though it feels very magical when we do it. It very simply turns being part the passage of time and the changing seasons into an ongoing ceremony, and we all know the power of ceremonies. Who hasn’t felt the outpouring of emotions at a beautiful wedding ceremony?
With words and the meaning associated with them in combination with special events, such as the moon being full or the coming together of two people who love one another before witnesses, we make magic of our life by reconnecting with the present moment. In the present moment we meet ourselves and feel purpose and meaning.
Almost every people have names for their moons that are unique to the seasons and local nature. At Magic is Key we are discovering the names for the full moons that our Danish ancestors bestowed upon them. They are some of the progeny of the Vikings and are relatives of the Celts. We share Danish pronunciation along with the meaning of each name.
